Jamie Fernandes was a 24-year-old Senior First Officer at Ryanair. His life was tragically cut short on July 11, 2024, in a fatal motorway crash on the M62 near Warrington, Cheshire. Along with Captain Matt Greenhalgh, 28, Jamie was traveling to Liverpool John Lennon Airport when their taxi collided with two lorries. Both pilots lost their lives at the scene, while the taxi driver was seriously injured. A 61-year-old lorry driver was arrested on suspicion of causing the crash, although he was later released on conditional bail.

Jamie had achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot, a career he cherished dearly. He was known for his kindness, humor, and positive attitude. Outside of work, he enjoyed sports like golf, squash, and hockey, and loved spending time with friends. His family described him as someone who was “living his best life” and had many plans for the future.
In Tribute: The Memorial Award
In honor of Jamie and Captain Greenhalgh, Ryanair established the ‘Matt Greenhalgh and Jamie Fernandes Memorial Award.’ This award will be given annually to the top-performing cadet at the Ryanair East Midlands Training Centre. Additionally, funds raised in their memory have been directed toward a scholarship trust to support aspiring pilots, especially those from diverse backgrounds.
